Professional Interests

Design and synthesis, characterization, and property studies of organic-inorganic hybrid (composites) and inorganic materials of fundamental and current technological, environmental, and medicinal interests. Current emphasis is on nanoscale science and nanotechnology. We are interested in the fabrication of novel nanostructured materials (nanomaterials)with desirable (catalytic, electronic, magnetic, and conducting) properties controllable at the molecular level. A major focus is on zeolitic and porous materials and nanostructured systems for applications in catalysis, biochemical and chemical sensing, pollution control, gas storage, biomedical imaging and medicine. My interdisciplinary research has projects for inorganic-, organic-, materials-, computational-, biological-, and analytical chemists. We use conventional and non-conventional synthetic methods and employ a variety of materials characterization and evaluation techniques including different spectroscopic methods, x-ray crystallography, neutron diffraction and scattering, and synchrotron radiation-based techniques. We have excellent collaboration with prominent universities, research centers, national laboratories, and industries. My research work has been highlighted in such international journals and magazines as Science, Science News, and Chemical and Engineering News. It has also found coverage in science news media, TV, and Radio.

My research work has led to the development of innovative graduate degree program in Materials and Chemical Synthesis. The new program, which has filled a major gap in the higher education curriculum, is offered nationwide via live TV and internet. The program is attracting major industries and education foundations, and it has helped in placing IIT among the top universities and colleges in the US in granting Master's degrees in chemistry.

Follwoing are some of representative recent publications from a list of over seventy research papers published in peer-reviewed international journals, five Monograph chapters and review articles, three patents, and over fifty invited talks at international and national conferences and symposia, industries, national laboratories, and research universities. Besides, I have been Organizer & Chair of eight international & national conferences and symposia covering various aspects of the research interests in my group.
