1. Transcribing needs to be done by Friday! If we do not meet this
deadline we will not have enough time to produce our final presentation!

2. Webpage Layout: Our layout and basic architecture was discussed at the
last meeting. Interviews are separated according to the themes including
personal, economical, political etc. (Susan do you have the complete
list?)

3. Print Jornal: Yi Leng and Susan will handle major design. Basic
layout was also discussed at the meeting. The format somewhat follows the
webpage.

4. This coming weeks meeting will be time for us to get the stories
arranged for the presentation. Transcribers please remember to highlite
info in the transcript so it will be easier for the reader to look for the
themes (write down themes along the margins was the best idea).

See everyone Friday.

March 4, 2000
Folks,

I forgot to assign a secretary for yesterday's meetings so, by default, the
task is mine. Here goes:

EQUIPMENT

--Jacobius has our computer specs and will order the computer by Monday. He
will take off the scanner and printer from the specs: Harrington, Jacobius,
and Coogan agreed that both IPRO teams would share one scanner and one
printer. Harrington also agreed to let us set up our computer in the
basement of Siegel. Coogan is having keys made so that we can all have
access to this room. We will store our other equipment there, as well.
--Our transcriber device has arrived.
--some grumbling that we ought to buy our own digital camera!

INTERVIEW CONTACTS

--Trisha will arrange an interview with Jarell Toliver
--Dacia will arrange an interview with Michelle (in the flower shop) and
will also call Pilgrim Baptist Church (Reverand Davis) and Olivet Baptist
Church (in addition to waiting for her other call-backs)
--Nicole will call the volunteer director at Michael Reese hospital for
possible interivews. She has already called Barbara Moore (the CHA resident
who was interviewed in The Reader). She will also investigate the
possibility of getting NSBE junior kids/parents involved in our project.
--David will arrange an interview date with his parents and possibly his
great Aunt.
--Susan will inquire if Stacy would like to do an interview

UPCOMGING INTERVIEWS

--Nicole, Dacia, YiLeng, Ravi, Shereazad, and Susan will descend upon Chevy
Chase Nursuing home at 6:30 on Monday armed with Dave's camera, the IIT
digital camera, and two tape recorders. Susan has posted interview
questions and I have added to here list. All are welcome to read, revise,
and mediate upon these questions. Good luck you guys! Yours will be our
very first interview!
--Dacia and Dave will interview Gloria Yearby on the 11th of March
--David and Susan will interview Alderman Periwinkle on the 29th of March.

HISTORY/BACKGROUND

--Ravi continues with his summaries of The Promised Land
--Trisha awaits a call back from Julie Richards
--Nicole will contact Professor Barrett and Leroy Kennedy to set up meetings
--Yi Leng will contact Professor Grimshaw to set up a meeting
--Nicole and YiLeng will then invite the rest of the group to join
them for small group
meetings with Grimshaw, Barrett, and Kennedy
--David will contact Harold Lucas, Irma Dobbins, and Leroy Kennedy for a
lunch meeting. (David, I just realized I have a dept. meeting at noon next
friday that I cant get out of. Besides, next friday is the friday before
spring break, so you might need to shoot for a few weeks from now.)
--Shereazad will complement his GIS research with other library research in
government documents in consultation with Galvin librarians. Goal: to
provide content for the web site and eventually for our print publication,
both graphical and textual--factual information about Bronzeville:
demographics, images, street grids, etc.

WEB SITE
--David, Liz, and Badhri will apply the concepts generated at the last
meeting (regarding site layout, graphics, etc.) to our web site. David will
upload the team pictures.

Time started : 1.30p.m.

1. The first thing discussed was the e-mail from Tom Jacobious regarding the
equipment that is needed for the IPRO.

2. Everyone reported what progress had been made during the past week:
   (a) Yi Leng : Discussed that another alternate method of printing would
be digital copying method, which would bring down the cost of printing to $
1987.50 . Also discussed the logo which were of 3 different types and the
group felt in general that the big logo, representing the family, would be
most appropriate.

for interviewing purpose.
   (c) Dacia : Set up contacts for interviewing during the next week.
   (d) David : Tried to contact Mary Ann Smith

outline of the key points to be discussed during the interview.

5. Dacia fixed up a few interviews for the next week as well as the week
after.

6. The group met back at 4.00p.m to discuss what had been covered.
    (a) The team which had to chalk out the points to be discussed in the
interviews came up with the following points:
-- Concentrate on a time frame of the 1940's and onwards.
-- Concentrate on the cultural activities of that period and the
cultural changes that they experienced over the years.
-- Discuss the so called "governmet protection" given to them.

February 8, 2000
1. CONTACT INFORMATION
A information packet was passed out at the meeting that contained the
groups contact information.
For all email addresses, the first character is lower case.

2. GROUP CONTRACT
The group contract was reviewed. Some information has been clarified
such as:
Requirements section 3: Short progress reports should be typed
up in a memo-type format. The hardcopy will be kept in a binder that will
be kept in Dave's office. If you deem neccessary, email a copy of your
memo to the list-server for everyone to view.

3. IPRO LOGO
Majority opinion was with the blue and yellow logo designed by Yi
Leng. Trisha will work on collecting pictures to add to the
logo. Susan and Nikki said they might have some picture ideas. 3-5
different variations of the logo should be brought in by the next meeting
for everyone to look at.

4. PRINT FORMAT
Majority liked a tape binding with glossy pages. The format most agreed
upon was the "New York Films" Catalog. Yi Leng is waiting to get quotes
on prices for producing such a product. A normal camera is preffered for
pictures in the print format. Yi Leng will be in charge of print format.

5. ONLINE FORMAT/COMPUTER FORMAT
Nikki contacted Kevin Pei of the Millenium Project. He will get back to
her with more info. Many disliked the idea of having video clips on the
webpage because it would take too long to load. Text interlaced with
images with option for short audio/video clip was preferred.

6. EQUIPMENT NEEDS ASSESSMENT
Digital cameras can be borrowed from CNS with permission of Jennifer
Kirchhoff. Other options include talking to Michael Hites to see if he
would like to help purchase and item in exchange to keep the item after
the IPRO. Video recording: Digital cameras have all three features
available: video, camera, and audio. Audio recording options
include: digital format with MP3 recorders or mini disk recorders; a
normal tape recorder.
Dave gave information on Audio transcribers for Liz to go over, along w/
info on Digital cameras. Liz is to assess the best options for recording
the stories. Susan will ask her friend regarding the digital camera that
take 20 second video recordings. Badhri will look into computer options
and come back with prices.

7. JOBS/DUTITES
Badhri and David will work on the Webpage
Dave and Nikki will come up with a proposal

8. PROSPECTIVE INTERVIEWEES INFORMATION
Dacia sent in her contact list for people that we could interview. Susan
passed out a list detailing differnt groups of people to target. This
brought up a discussion on whether or not we need a theme. Who do you
want to interview? We want to establish a template set of broad guideline
questions for the interviewers. Questions that we came up with include:
 - How long have you lived here?
 - When did you move here?
 - What problems do you face in your daily life?
 - How to improve?
 - What do you like about Bronzeville?
 - Has the community changed?
After discussing different topics, here are the topics which people wanted:
 - current problems
 - master narrative of histroy w/ timeline overlay
 - personal histroy
 - personal stories
 - social/economic changes

Interview prospets include:
Alderman Dorothy Tillman
Dave's wife's co-worker Gloria Yearby
Pilgrim Baptist Church
David's parents
Sensei Collins from Mount Carmel
Urma D.

9.
Everyone is to look over the Street Level Media page for ideas on stories.
Meeting time has been changed to 1:30 PM on Fridays.

February 7, 2000
Folks,

This is a long email, but only because I want everyone to know what
everyone's doing. Some of it is follow-up to what we discussed on Friday,
and some of it is new. The key item is that next week, we will meet at 1:30,
not 1:00, in room 202 Siegel (the same classroom we were in last time.) I
will try to get our conference room in Siegel. I will let you know if I get
it.

Now, here's something for everyone!

1. Dacia: At our last meeting, we agreed that it'd be a good idea to keep
meeting minutes. Liz took notes on our last session and will be posting
them to the list soon. They will remind us what we did and what everyone
agreed to do. The notetaker's job will rotate. We also agreed to type
whatever work we do each week and present it to the group as a memo. I will
keep a file of all the memos. Second, I have a copy of the handout I gave
everyone. I will tape it to my office door (234, Siegel) for you on Tuesday.

2. Dacia and David: First Dacia. We did look at your list and considered
the advantages and disadvantages of such a wide variety of interviewees.
Good discussion. Perhaps, now, you can start calling some of those places?
Try to secure from each person a committment to at least 2 hours,
preferably, on 2 different days. You can tell them that we may be ready to
interview in a few weeks. Try to get some idea of their schedules. David:
you might do the same with your parents and for the alderman. Scheduling
the alderman, of course, will be harder. But you might call to inquire about
her interest and perhaps get some leads on who else to interview. I will be
doing the same with my contact at the Federal Reserve Bank and my lead on
the Pilgrim Baptist Church.

3. Liz: I am not sure I mentioned it or if you wrote it down, but we will
need a device for transcribing our tapes once we're done. Likewise, if we
can't get a digital recorder or digitial camera, we may want to also secure
a regular cassette recorder. If the automated speech transcriber that I
brought in seems unfeasible, then we may need to consider some other means
by which a person can listen to the tape of the interview on a headset,
control the stop/play with her feet, and keep typing. I've seen such
devices with cassette recorders, but not with digital recorders.

4. Shereazad: could you visit Alyson Atkins in Galvin library? I met her
during the first meeting and she suggested that we may be interested in
using GIS to gather information about Bronzeville. GIS stands for
Geographical Information System, I think. I am fairly certain it allows us
to produce maps, some historical, which include demographic and economic
information about the community. This may be something we include in our
final report, our publications, or both.

5. Ravi: Would you like to meet this Tuesday at 11 in my office? We can go
over what you've gotten from the _Promised Land_. I can give you _Black
Metropolis_, and, perhaps, we can set up a rudimentary, historical timeline
of events? Let me know if that time works.

6. David and Badhri: We need to figure out if we have already been assigned
an account for our web site. If so, we need the password. Contact Gerard
Voland or Tom Jacobius. They are in charge of IPROs. If we have no account,
contact CNS to get one. Try to name the account in such a way that it
represents our project well. In other words, try not to call it IPRO 316!
Second, it is never too early to begin browsing for good website designs.
Try to come up with at least 10 sites, each. At our next meeting, you can
show us some of your preferences and we can discuss them. Then you can begin
work on the template. Keep in mind that we really have two web sites in
mind: the journal and the final report, which will include information about
us, too.

7. YiLeng: There is another Gwendylon Brooks book that we ought to get our
hands on. It is called In the Mecca. It's about the high rise that used to
stand where ITRI now stands. Can you try to get a copy? It has a great poem
about Mies, I'm told.

8. Nicole: While we are waiting for the final figures from Badhri and Liz,
you might draft the text of our funding proposal, addressed to Vice
President Kennedy, in the Office of Community Development. Hopefully, we
will be able to submit that early next week.

9. Trisha and Susan: Can you read the interview transcripts conducted by
Street Level Youth Media at http://streetlevel.iit.edu/chs/dgb/dgbints.html.
(There are about ten of them, I think. Divide them amongst yourselves. Read
them and, as a team, choose 4 or 5 that seem interesting. Present them (or
excerpts of them) next Friday. This should help us figure out what we want
to ask (or not ask) people, and what we want our final product(s) to look
like.

Thanks, everyone.
Dave

January 29, 2000
Hi there,

Great session on Friday. I'll look forward to hearing your reports next
week. Nicole, if the 1pm start-time is too early (like you have another
time conflict) let us know. In the mean time . . .

I have created an email list for our group on www.egroups.com. If you want
to tell the group anything during the week (announce something, ask for
help, submit a report, etc), send it to bronze-stories@egroups.com. Yeah,
I tried using "Bronze" and "Bronzeville" but they were taken. Kinda makes
you wonder who else might be out there doing this kind of thing, doesn't it?

Related: You can also goto www.egroups.com and login with your email
address and email password. There you can take advantage of other egroups
features. For example, you can see an archive of our posts, change your
profile with the "members" button (if you want to regulate when you get
your email), or use their chat room.

Best,
Dave Coogan
