Textbook: Classical Dynamics of Particles and Systems (4th Edition), J.B. Marion and S.T. Thornton

Mission: to understand mechanics at an advanced level – Second semester of two semester program.

Material to be covered: Systems of particles, rotating frames, motion of rigid bodies, couples oscillations, continuous systems and special relativity (Chapters 9-14)

Homework: Homework assignments will be made every week with few exceptions. All homework will be collected except as announced. Homework will be due at the beginning of the following class period prior to the beginning of the lecture unless otherwise stated. No late homework assignments will be accepted unless prior arrangements are made.

Quizzes:  Quizzes may be given in lecture periodically.

Examinations: There will be two examinations: one midterm and one final examination. These will be closed book, closed-notes, and no calculator examinations. Students can bring one 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper with equations to the exam.

Presentations: There will be several presentations during the semester.  Many of these will be presenting solutions to assigned homework problems.  These presentations will be graded and included in the overall grade for the class.

Grading: Grades will be determined from the following sources and percent contribution to the final grade:
