TWO REPORTS

Due dates: Oct 24, Dec 12

  1. Report 1: First book must be "Science Fiction" with the computer as an important part of the story.
    Sign up for your book by placing the name of your book and the name of the author following your name at http://www.iit.edu/~cs485/books/index.html.
    1. Who is the author (1/2 page). Author's area of expertise. Other works.
    2. Audience of the book (1/2 page). Readers most likely to like or dislike it and why.
    3. Summary (4 or more pages). Thesis or main theme of book. What part did computers play and what effect did computers have on the society.
    4. Critique (1 page). Did you like it or not, why? Main strengths and weaknesses
  2. Report 2: A short science fiction story you have written, using your talk/paper topic and computers and society as the theme. 2000- 3000 words.

Reports will be submitted online by linking URL (World Wide Web address) to the "Report 1" or "Report 2" entry by your name at http://www.iit.edu/~cs485/reports/index.html.


PANEL DISCUSSIONS:

45-60 minute presentation; there will be two panels each class period. Each panel will address one section of readings. The panel should not just repeat material from the readings but cast them in a new light and provide additional material during the course of their discussion.

  1. You are a panel of experts presenting your topic.
  2. The panel will choose a moderator (from outside the group) before each session.
  3. There will be an online document discussing the topic for reference by the class. VALID related links reflecting additional online research on the topic are highly encouraged.
  4. Presentation style is very important.
  5. The last ten minutes are for questions.

STUDENT PRESENTATIONS:

20 minute presentation; onscreen Powerpoint presentation to accompany talk. Powerpoint is available on ACC computer lab systems.

  1. Background or history of the topic.
  2. Research sources.
  3. Issues, risks, concerns.
  4. Consequences of not addressing issues.
  5. Recommended actions.

PAPER:

Due Date: Dec 5

1000-2000 word paper for publication.

  1. Name of publication
  2. Bibliography

  4. Final paper
