• soc.singles is a Usenet "newsgroup," a discussion group devoted to anyone who is single or who has ever been single.
  
  
• It dates back more than a decade, to a time when Internet and Usenet really were places only for geeks.
  
  
• Styles itself a "cocktail party" in which uncommonly intelligent (for the most part) people hang out and talk. Actively hostile to posts of personal ads.
  
  
• Holds weekend-long retreats, called "boinks," at which soc.singles regular posters get to see each other in person (some travel astonishing distances to attend). Very entertaining, if exhausting, events.

• Soc.singles.moderated is a relatively new newsgroup descended from soc.singles. It was chartered and "newgroup'ed" so as to use an automated moderation system that would suppress the excessive crossposting that was plaguing the original soc.singles.
