Welcome to the Sex Determination Journal Club!



Our journal club meets weekly, as prelude to my lab group meeting. The journal club runs for about an hour and is open to all members of the campus community. Each speaker selects one or two papers from the recent primary research literature and gives a critical presentation and evaluation of the data. Questions and discussion are encouraged, and are sometimes quite lively. Reasonable topics for presentation include genetic control of development, including but not limited to: sex determination in flies, worms, and mammals; transcription factor biochemistry; germline differentiation; and receptors and signal transduction (I can offer suggestions or approval, but it's probably better if each speaker selects a topic on their own). The aims of this journal club are to keep up with the literature, and to improve one's critical and public-speaking skills. My lab group meeting immediately follows the journal club presentation, and is a private affair that runs for another 1.5-2 hours, during which we discuss our current experiments. Typically we meet in the evenings, and we rotate responsibility for bringing dinner to journal club. Day, time, and room location change each semester according to schedules.
