Visits to Haiti
Students who are involved in a project have the opportunity to go on a trip to Haiti in order to implement or follow up on a project they designed. The trips are organized and arranged by Haiti Outreach National who has had considerable experience in coordinating these types of trips.
Cost
The cost of a trip is between $1000 and $1300 per student, the cost depends on the season and includes room and board.
Details
We take an early flight to Miami and then, we fly to the Haitian capital Port aux Prince where we spend the first night at the Visa Lodge hotel. The next morning, we take a 35-minute flight to Pignon where we are welcome by Haiti Outreach.
After some time at the Haiti Outreach Headquarters, we drive to La Jeune, a neighboring village where we will settle for the duration of the trip. The accommodation is an old missionary camp with a couple of cottage that can fit about 10 people each. Two Haitian women prepare delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. Electricity is available from 7 pm to 9 pm and cold water is sporadically running but it remains very comfortable for Haitian standard. The daily activity will depend on the purpose of the trip and will be programmed by Haiti Outreach to ensure all details are properly met.
Vaccination
Haiti is a developing country and travel to the region requires proper immunization. The vaccinations recommended by the Travel Medicine and Immunization Center at the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation are:

The traveler will be responsible for ensuring that all necessary immunizations are received.
