The Department of Mathematics and Science Education at Illinois
Institute of Technology
is recruiting science teachers for participation
in year five of Project ICAN, a five-year teacher enhancement
grant funded by the National Science Foundation.

Scientific inquiry and nature of science provide a meaningful found-
ation for the learning of subject matter, not to mention their inclusion
of the Illinois Learning Standards. Current national and state reforms
stress student understanding of scientific inquiry and nature of science,
yet these skills and concepts are difficult for teachers to incorporate
into the classroom without understanding the development of scien-
tific knowledge and support for translating their knowledge into
effective instruction and assessment. As participants from the first
four years of the project can attest, Project ICAN empowers teachers
to do just that.

Beginning in the fall, ICAN hosts monthly workshops throughout the
academic year. Workshops focus on disciplinary knowledge, scientific
inquiry, nature of science, pedagogical knowledge, skills related to
scientific inquiry and nature of science, leadership skills, and the
development of performance-based assessments for scientific inquiry
and nature of science.

Project ICAN also provides stipends and course credit. Summer Institute
Stipends: $100 daily; Academic Year Workshop Stipends: $100 daily.
Graduate credit and continuing education credit available.
