IEEE Student Branch
IEEE@IIT is the student branch of IEEE at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). We are one of the leading professional student organizations on campus. Our members consist mainly of students in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science majors. They include both undergraduate and graduate students.
The IEEE@IIT mission is threefold:
- To facilitate our members' future careers
- To foster technological innovation
- To provide community (networking) for our members
Our Services:
General Meetings:
General meetings are held periodically and usually last about 45 minutes. During these meetings, we take care of housekeeping matters related to our branch. We usually have a guest speaker or a faculty member talking about a topic of interest to the students. The presentations are usually short so that the students can ask questions. General meetings provide opportunities for students to interact with people from the corporate world and also with faculty members. Free lunch is served during these meetings.
Topics that have been presented in the past:
- Interconnects and Signal Integrity
- Neural Network Process Optimization
- Careers in Sales engineering
- Control Systems Industry today
- Cellular technology
- Interaction with other engineering fields in the workplace
We have featured speakers from the following companies:
- Microsoft
- Motorola
- IBM
- Lucent Technologies
- Case corporation
- Abbott Laboratories
- Northrop Grumman
- Molex
Students are invited to bring their resumes when we have corporate speakers.
Company Presentations:
We host special presentations by companies outside our regular meetings. These sessions are usually 2 hours long and enable our members to get a snapshot of the company as the companies usually make a presentation centered on their latest products/technology. Some companies that have presented include Motorola and Power Engineering Society (PES). Students are encouraged to bring their resumes. Food is also served.
We plan to promote these kind of events more this year. Watch out for the flyers!
Field Trips:
We sponsor field trips to companies (electrical/computer engineering focused) during the semester. This helps our members extend their learning experience outside the classrooms and see what the industry is really like. The trip is usually scheduled in the early afternoon during the week or on Fridays but it is very flexible depending on members' preference. Previous trips include a visit to Motorola.
Social Events:
We host one or two social events per semester. These events are open to all students and serve to promote IEEE on campus.
Mock Interviews/Resume Workshops:
This is a new assignment we are embarking on to aid our upperclassmen, especially in their job search. Watch out for the flyers!
Tutoring:
Students can stop by the office during office hours to for help with ECE/physics/math classes.
Special Projects:
Special projects are arranged to encourage students to put into practice their classroom knowledge and get hands-on experience. A technical team is being setup to take care of that. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a committee and gain valuable experience.
Others:
We also host other activities such as faculty-student lunches where students get to interact more closely with their professors (i.e., from the Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science departments). They get to voice their concerns regarding classes and get answers to their questions. We also have the course preview sessions each semester in conjunction with our department so that juniors/seniors have a better understanding of their courses for the following semester.
