Outreach -- the Early IDentification of Manufacturing Leaders.

The Bachelor of Manufacturing Technology Outreach Programs Program are centered in the Chicago Urban Area and funded as part of a FIPSE Grant to IIT. The goal of our outreach is to acquaint high school and community college students in, or graduated from vocational programs with the career opportunities available to them in the cities' manufacturing plants after obtaining a Bachelors Degree in Manufacturing Technology and to increase the participation of traditionally underrepresented groups in manufacturing leadership positions. Our outreach program has both a shorter and longer components.

Our one day BMT Program is structured to give rising high school seniors and community college students a chance to visit IIT, see its advanced manufacturing facilities, and to spend several hours on the internet surfing sites related to manufacturing.

The second component, held several times during the school year, involves two week Innovention Programs which center around conceiving, designing, patent searching, manufacturing, and defending a prototype product. This "hands on" program is designed to acquaint prospective scientists, engineers, and technologists with all components of the manufacturing process and how the different academic skills will prepare them to succeed.
