Chicago AMP students flew to University of Alabama at Birmingham to present their research results at the 2nd Annual NSF-AMP Student Research Conference, July 31-August 2, 1994. We had a early morning flight. The two Cheryl's, Debra, and Prof. Johnson met Dana from NW at the conference and set up the posters.
This was Debra's first flight so she was excited asking many questions. The three helped each other get their posters looking good. The area wasn't as stated so we improvised. The big AMP banner was taped to the wall for all to see and then, after a the dinner and speaches, we crashed in our hotel rooms.
Morning bought a free breakfeast and a walk to the conference center. The room was soon crowded. The participants multitasked as questions came from all directions. They could tell who the judges were. After it was over they rested on their tables as Prof. Johnson took pictures for the Web page.
The women bonded with Dr. Shirley Malcom, a member of the President's Advisor board for SEMT. At the awards ceremony, we learned that ChAMP participant, Debra Dunn won the 1st place award in the life sciences divison establishing a tradition for future ChAMP students. That night we partied at the Mill Bakery, Eatery & Brewery with a group from the Southern Colorado AMP.
One afternoon was spent touring the Civil Rights District. We parked near Kelly Ingram Park, a meeting place for many of the early civil rights demonstrations, and walked to the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, site of a deadly bombing in 1963.
After the awadrs ceremoney, group pictures were taken in front of the hall. The NSF leadership team joined us for this group picture. Projectors were also imortalized in film. Drs Bill McHenry and Luther Williams are front and center.
We returned to Chicago an celebrated our successes. Congradulations to all those who presented. ChAMP left its mark in spite of the fact we were the newest AMP, and smallest contingent at the conference.
