THE ACADEMIC ADVANTAGE

The Bridge program gives you the opportunity toget a "head start" on your first year.
You will be challenged to work to the best of your ability while taking two credit-bearing courses. The first course, Physics 199: Science in Context, is designed to enhance your problem-solving and critical thinking skills while providing you with a hands-on approach to mastering scientific concepts. Techniques for mathematical problem-solving are explored in an applied context. This course counts toward your GPA, but not for your major course requirements.
The second course, English 101: Techniques of Prose Writing, counts for credit toward your major and provides you with important writing and communication skills. This course features scientific writing and research and will help improve your comprehension of scientific reading
In addition, you will participate in a computer science workshop twice a week. This workshop will introduce you to the latest word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software, as well as to the Internet and World Wide Web as an academic resource and learning tool.
The Physics 199 course will provide you with a solid base for your future physics courses and will help you master crucial thinking and learning skills. Completing the English 101 course in the summer will allow you to take another course in it's place in the fall or allow you to sign up for a lighter load to help you through what is sometimes a difficult first semester. In addition, it will provide you with communication skills essential to success in many other courses. The CS workshop will give you ahead start on mastering the applications and computer tools which are essential for succeeding in college.

PROGRAM DESIGN

The summer Bridge program is a central component of a full year experience designed to help you succeed in your crucial first year at IIT. Other workshops held during the academic year, will continue to develop your academic preparedness and build your confidence.
Classroom activities, cooperative learning exercises, and assignments will be tailored somewhat to suit your individual needs as assessed through placement tests and entrance interviews. You will have access to IIT's finest tutors, teaching assistants, and equipment to help you as you learn.

Tools FOR SUCCESS

A successful Bridge program not only provides participants with course work and hands on exercises, but also helps them to develop a strategy for success.
"Introduction to the University," is a specially designed workshop which meets twice weekly and is run out of the Center for Multicultural Programs. This workshop will: 1) help you develop correct study skills, including effective note and test-taking; 2) give you tips on interacting productively with instructors and advisors; 3) help you learn how to use your time effectively through scheduling, planning, and organizing; and 4) introduce you to campus support services and how to use them effectively.
Working with others on science and engineering team projects and multimedia presentations will spark your creativity, develop interpersonal skills and foster leadership.
Through the Bndge program, you will meet other science, engineering, and math students and have the opportunity to form friendships that will last you throughout your academic career at IIT.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

One of the key aspects of the Bridge program is communal living. Students live on campus for the duration of the program, although they may go home on weekends. Successful African American and Latino upperclassmen live and interact with Bridge participants to assist in their adjustment to the campus and dormitory environment, coordinate social activities, and provide academic assistance and mentoring.

CULTURE AND FUN

Although you will be participating in a rigorous, intellectually challenging program, there is always time for fun! Social activities will include cultural tours of Chicago's historic Latino and African American neighborhoods, featuring fascinating wall murals and great food; volleyball games and barbecues, "Physics Day" trips to Great America, and aerobic and weight training sessions in the-gym.
