Student Wins First Place at NSF ConferenceAlberto Quintana, a mechanical engineering senior, won a first place at the National Science Foundation's "Diversity in the Scientific and Technological Workforce" conference held in Detroit, Mich., Nov. 18-20. Quintana gave an oral presentation of his project, titled "Instantaneous Pressure Distribution Around an Oscillating Cylinder." For the past three semesters, Quintana has been engaged in undergraduate research sponsored by the NSF Chicago Alliance for Minority Participation (AMP), but only began working on this project this semester. Professor David Williams and Dr. John Bernhardt of the MMAE department were his advisers. Quintana received a $500 check and a hand-held graphics computer. |
Shaheerah Fateen, a chemical engineering senior, also presented her research, "Adsorption on Granular Activiated Carbon," at the conference. Kim Terrell, a computer engineering senior, and Jose Herrera, a computer science senior, also participated in the conference. Peter Johnson, professor of chemistry and prinicipal investigator for the IIT-AMP sponsored undergraduate research program, and Cheryl Caplan, ETC director and coordinator for the IIT AMP programs, accompanied the students on the trip. The Chicago AMP sponsors undergraduate research for students of African American, Hispanic, American Indian, or Pacific Island descent. Sophomores, juniors and seniors, with a G.P.A. of 2.8 or above, who are interested in conducting undergraduate research, should contact Cheryl Caplan, (312) 567-5216, caplan@charlie.cns.iit.edu, or Prof. Peter Johnson, (312) 567-3440, johnson@charlie.cns.iit.edu. |
