High school rocket scientists put their creations to the test

More than 30 area high school students will launch custom-built model rockets Thursday, July 30, in IIT's annual summer competition, part of the university's Discovery Approach to Science Enhancement (DASH) program. The competition, involving 16 teams of two students each, will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the IF softball field, immediately west of the Stuart Building. The students have been studying math and physics, including acceleration, velocity and aerodynamic forces, leading to the design and construction of their own model rockets. Students launch their rockets and then measure their speed and maximum altitude. The objective is for the students to construct a rocket which flies to exactly 60 meters before ejecting its parachute and falling back to earth. The rocket that comes closest to 60 meters is the winner.
