Student's dedication soars to new heights

Kids and rockets Stevenson High School sophomore Sandeep Mendiratta is a 15-year-old who knows what he wants to do in life. So committed is Sandeep to a future career in medicine that he traveled from his home in Kildeer to Chicago's South Side every day for a month to particiate in a program he hopes will help him achieve that goal.

The Discovery Approach to Science Enhancement program at the Illinois Institute of Technology aims to promote careers in science and
engineering for high school students through hands-on experiences and discovery - and with no tuition charged.

Sandeep and about 50 other students from the Chicago area spent the last month studying physics through outdoor experiments, computer programs and even a trip to Great America.

Then they put their knowledge to the test by constructing rocket gliders out of basswood and holding a contest Thursday to see whose could fly 60 meters, high.

"The commute made the days very long, but it was worth it," said Sandeep, who traveled by car, train and bus to get to IIT each day.

"A career in medicine has always been just my personal aspirations, but school really hasn't been too much of an influence on that," he said. "But the DASH program has been a big influence about reinforcing those aspirations because they made the stuff really interesting.
