High school students interested in careers in the fields of math, technology and engineering have a chance to get some hands-on training from experts this summer. For the seventh year, the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is offering its free SMET (Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology) Summer Institutes programs to high school students in the Chicagoland metropolitan area. "The goals of the DASH and Early ID programs are to demonstrate the opportunities that science, math, engineering and technology offer, to encourage the pursuit of these studies in college and to help students develop relationships with peers who share a similar interest in. these fields," said Donna Jauregui; coordinator for SMET. Two SMET programs, both designed to excite and educate students about college, and career opportunities in scientific fields, are currently available at no cost to participants. The programs target students in the Chicago Public Schools system. The DASH (Discovery Approach to Science enHancement) program is for college-bound 9th and 10th-grade students and runs from July 6 to July 28, Participants will explore physics concepts and design, build and launch model rockets to illustrate those concepts. The DASH program also includes a "Physics Day" trip to Great America and a visit to the Museum of Science and Industry. |
The Early identification program runs from July 6 to August 4 and is intended for African-American, Latino or Native American students who are college-bound in science, engineering or math fields and have completed their junior year in high school. Participants take college-level "mini-courses" in topics including math, physics, computer science and several branches of engineering-mechanical, aerospace, electrical, computer, civil, chemical and metallurgical-each of which involves a related field trip. The program includes interaction with engineers and visits to major corporations, and cultural and social activities are also part of the program. Both programs are held primarily on IIT's main campus and run Monday through Friday, 9:30 am. to 3 p .m. IIT professors and high school teachers provide instruction for the programs. SMET Summer Institutes programs are funded by IIT and private and governmental grants. In addition to offering the programming for free, SMET Summer Institutes is making a lunch stipend available. Interested students can visit the program's website (www.iit.edu/-smet) for information and an online application or call 312-567-3732. Prospective applicants should hurry-the application deadline for both the DASH and Early Identification programs is Friday, June 23. |
