Early IDentification of Scientists and Engineers

The Early IDentification Program is centered in the Chicago Urban Area and has been funded as part of The National Science Foundation's CRCM effort and more recently by the Polk Bros. Foundation. The purpose of the Chicago CRCM Coalition -- Access 2000 -- is to increase the participation of traditionally underrepresented groups in science, engineering, and math (SEM) disciplines. This program has both summer and academic year components. Our summer EID Program is structured to give rising high school juniors and seniors a chan ce to take courses on the IIT campus as well as get involved in "hands on" science and engineering projects modeled after IIT's IPRO projects. We also introduce computer programming and communication skills. The summer component is a six week non-residen tial program which revolves around math in a science and engineering context. This program mirrors the pressures and expectations that students can expect to encounter in college and prepares them to use resources available to them as well as to aquire s tudy and time management skills.

The academic year components, held several times during the school year, involves both: 1) A two week Innovention Program which centers around designing, manufacturing, and defending a prototype product and 2) A two week Gobal Communications Program which centers around the WWW and the tools and programming skills needed to be "connected" in the next century.

The first academic year program is designed to acquaint prospective scientists, engineers, and technologists with all components of the manufacturing process and how academic skills can prepare them to solve real problems as well as understand the value o f team work. The second program focuses on the computer, the internet, information management, e-mail, and new programing languages such as JAVA. All students complete a web page in the process of learning HTML programing language.
