Last year the ChAMP Student Leadership Council was developed to encourage student participation in the decision-making process of the ChAMP alliance. Two representatives from each of the member institutions were selected to serve on the council and committees were formed to implement the process.

The council met for the first time this year on January 9 at Giordano's Pizzeria. The council decided to adopt a more informal organization structure and to change the focus of the group.
Several of the students who attended the meeting suggested ways that council could think about serving students in the alliance.

Tristan Montanez, a ChAMP scholar from the University of Illinois at Chicago, indicated that he would like the organization to offer more professional development opportunities.

Kim Terrell, a ChAMP from IIT, also indicated that there needs to be greater emphasis on student development.

Raymond Shariff, a Chicago State ChAMP scholar, said that he would like to see more opportunities for students to network with professionals in the field.
Marcia Boyd, graduate student assistant for the Executive Director of CHAMP, encouraged the students to seek every opportunity to develop professionally, academically and socially.

Students were informed of the upcoming ChAMP Student Research Conference to be held this spring.

Overall, the Leadership Council seems to be moving in the right direction. The results of the Student Needs Assessment survey, which was conducted in late 1996, indicated that the program should be advertised more broadly at individual institutions and that students would like to participate in the program more actively.

The members of the Leadership Council are looking forward to meeting the challenges of the new year and making a difference in the alliance.

The council welcomes the new ChAMP partners and encourages students at new institutions to join the council.
