The 1996 AMP Student Leadership Council

In an effort to involve students more directly in decision-making and AMP activities, the AMP Student Leadership Council was formed this January.

The Council, consisting of two students from each consortium school, is charged with acting as a liaison between the project directors and the executive director of AMP, and AMP students at each campus.

Kim Terrell, a computer and electrical engineering major at IIT and spokes-person for the Council, said that all of the students on the Council are excited to be part of the administrative team and included in the decision making process of AMP.

Terrell, speaking about her involvement on the Council, said, "I'm happy to see students using advanced technology, like e-mail and video teleconferencing, to bring us all closer together."

The Council met for the first time on January 24 to organize as a group and delegate duties. At that time, four sub-committees were created to work on events and programming.

The Information Committee members will act as liaison and recording secretaries, for the 1996 AMP Student Leadership Council, providing information to all the members of the Council. Kim Terrell and Angela Brandon, University of Illinois at Chicago, serve on this committee.
John Lindo, Northwestern University, and Jamal Hassan, Chicago State University, form the Finance Committee, responsible for securing moneys for working meetings, materials and budget items.

Charged with developing strategies and methods for organizing AMP programs, the Planning Committee consists of Lakeisha Hampton, Chicago State University; and Maria Cisneros, DePaul University.

Finally, the Special Events Committee will spearhead efforts on events throughout AMP. Esteban Linares, Loyola University; Priscilla Villeda, DePaul University; and Elizabeth Felton, Northwestern University, volunteered for this committee.

Each student representative was given an e-mail account at the beginning of March, enabling them to keep in contact despite their busy schedules.

In addition, the students on the Council will be participating in the poster workshop teleconference in March. The teleconference is designed to help students prepare for the AMP research event in April, and will help bring together students located at various sites throughout Chicago.
