Free Summer 2000 Programs for High School StudentsWe are excited to announce that the Illinois Institute of Technology SMET (science, Mathematics, engineering, technology) Summer Institutes is once again offering the Early identification (Early ID) and Discovery Approach to Science Enhancement (DASH) programs. The main goal of these programs is to provide academic enrichment opportunities for high school students who are interested in science and engineering and to excite and educate students about college and career choices in science, engineering, and math through various hands-on projects, experiments and field trips. There is no cost to attend the DASH and Early ID programs and participants may receive a lunch stipend. A web site (www.iit.edu/-smet) has been setup for the DASH and Early ID programs. Students can visit this site and obtain more detailed information regarding these programs. Students can also download the program applications in MS Word format from this site. The application deadline for the DASH and Early ID programs is June 23. 2000. |
The DASH ProgramThe DASH program runs from July 6 to July 28, 2000, Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM on IIT's Main Campus. This program is open to all college-bound 9th and 10th grade students. The aim of DASH is to motivate and prepare students for careers in science and engineering through a discovery process of learning and achievement. Students spend the first two weeks exploring the physical concepts regarding the relationship between acceleration, velocity, and distance. During the second two weeks, students are introduced to the world of engineering and manufacturing through the designing, building, and launching of model rockets. Classroom sessions are complemented by hands-on experiments, computer labs, and field trips, including a "Physics Day" trip to Great America. The Early ID ProgramThe Early ID program runs from July 6 to August 4, 2000, Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM on IIT's Main Campus. |
This program is open to African American, Latino, or Native American students who have completed their junior year and are college bound in a science, engineering, or math discipline. Students in the early ID program learn about college life and take college level "minicourses". Topics of study include: physics, math, computer science, and several engineering disciplines: mechanical, aerospace, electrical, computer, civil, chemical, and metallurgical. Students also visit major corporations, meet engineers, and see the practical applications of engineering theories. Early ID participants also go on field trips and participate in cultural and social activities. For more information contact...Donna Jauregui, Coordinator,
