General Information About Chicago
Population: Chicago is in Illionis State and was settled on the west coast of Lake Michigan which is the 6th biggest lake of the world. This third biggest city of the United States has a cosmopolitical structure with its 12 million residents. Around 3 million of this population live in the city of Chicago and the rest live around the Chicago area including the suburbs. There are several ethnic groups in this big population such as, Hispanic, Polish, Greek, Italian, and Asian.
Urban Planning: The order in Chicago which you will realize immediately differs Chicago from the other big cities such as New York and Los Angeles. The roads in Chicago being parallel to each other go from one end to the other on the north-south and west-east directions. This grid system makes being lost impossible. The downtown can be wandered easily by walking. Also the number of busses and well-organised railway system make the transportaion very easy.
Architecture: Chicago which is called “Windy City” had a big fire and nearly the whole city was burned. This grid system urban planning was built up. Chicago is also famous with its steel based structures. In 1974 the Sears Tower which is now the tallest building in United States and 4th of the world with its 110 stories and 442 metres high was built in Chicago. There is a sightseeing tour in the Sears Tower to see all around from the sky. Also the biggest trade center of the world with its 4.2 ft square area, Mercandise Mart, is another landmark in Chicago. There are lots of buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies Van Der Rohe around the city. Van Der Rohe who worked as a proffessor at the College of Architecture in Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) designed most of the buildings in the main campus of IIT. This situation makes IIT a landmark and this is only one reason out of many others why IIT attract many people.
Climate: Chicago is famous with its really cold winter. The weather becomes cold in the middle of September and leaves its place to a frosty weather called “Windchill” by December. Generally the Autumn and the Spring last no longer than 3 weeks. The wind blowing from the lake also drops the temperature in winter.
Economy: The living expenses is high in Chicago like the other big metropols and also Chicago is always broadening. Chicago has a wide and different range in job opportunities. It has the home offices of the leading companies such as Sears, Motorola, Boeing, McDonald’ s, Kraft, Caterpillar etc.
