"I'm glad I could participate in this fabulous conference!" said Sandeep 'Sunny' Mistry, a member of Dr. Dave Peterson's Interprofessional Project group.

IlT's top undergraduate talent was showcased at the First Annual Undergraduate Research Conference held on Friday, March 29th in the Hermann Hall Ballroom. Eighteen posters from many science and engineering disciplines were presented by the student researchers and judged by members of the IIT Faculty. Projects ranged from the effect of oxidation on the plastics used in artificial knees to fiber optic based pH sensors.

The special guest speaker was Aprille Ericsson-Jackson, an aerospace engineer from the Guidance and Control Branch of NASA. She talked about the importance of research in undergraduate education and was also a judge of the poster presentations. At a reception following the awards presentation, Dr. Ericsson-Jackson was surrounded by students with questions on graduate school, internships, and questions on the conditions which would be faced by NASA's female astronaut who recently joined the Russian space station crew for a five-month stint.

One presenter, Kristen Schnelle, senior in the Chemical Engineering Department, noted, "It was a lot of work, but I felt that I really learned more about my research through the process of preparing a poster presentation and answering the questions of faculty and students."

The success of this event and the many presenters and conference attendees says much about the students' abilities and interests, as well as the commitment of the IIT faculty and staff to making the undergraduate experience complete.

The presenters were particularly pleased at the number of department heads, faculty, and staff who turned out to see their presentations.

Sanjida Chowdhury, an award recipient, had this to say about the research conference, "I thought it was a great experience to have undergraduate and graduate researchers congregate together and finally be recognized for our hard work!"

The first place award went to Thomas Fuhr, a European undergraduate currently conducting research under Professor Jaeger of the Pritzker Institute for Medical Engineering. The second place award went to LaSalle Swanson doing research with Dr. Eugene Smotkin.

The third place award went to Diego Carlton and Kee Choi who designed a computer tutorial with Dr. James Karagiannes. Honorable mentions went to: Sanjida Chowdhury, Jake Lopata, and an interprofessional project group working with Dr. David Patterson.

Much of the success of this event can be attributed to the Undergraduate Research Conference Committee, consisting of Dr. Peter Johnson from the Biology, Chemistry and Physical Sciences Department and AMP-PI, Cheryl Caplan of ETC, and Kim Terrell, a junior in Computer Engineering. Special thanks go to the judges: Professors Kallend, Mostovoy, and Schug, the Undergraduate College for its award contributions, and the Chicago Alliance for Minority Participation (ChAMP) for its support and sponsorship
