"I'm glad I could participate in this fabulous conference!" said Sandeep 'Sunny' Mistry, a member of Dr. Dave Peterson's Interprofessional Project group. IlT's top undergraduate talent was showcased at the First Annual Undergraduate Research Conference held on Friday, March 29th in the Hermann Hall Ballroom. Eighteen posters from many science and engineering disciplines were presented by the student researchers and judged by members of the IIT Faculty. Projects ranged from the effect of oxidation on the plastics used in artificial knees to fiber optic based pH sensors. The special guest speaker was Aprille Ericsson-Jackson, an aerospace engineer from the Guidance and Control Branch of NASA. She talked about the importance of research in undergraduate education and was also a judge of the poster presentations. At a reception following the awards presentation, Dr. Ericsson-Jackson was surrounded by students with questions on graduate school, internships, and questions on the conditions which would be faced by NASA's female astronaut who recently joined the Russian space station crew for a five-month stint. One presenter, Kristen Schnelle, senior in the Chemical Engineering Department, noted, "It was a lot of work, but I felt that I really learned more about my research through the process of preparing a poster presentation and answering the questions of faculty and students." The success of this event and the many presenters and conference attendees says much about the students' abilities and interests, as well as the commitment of the IIT faculty and staff to making the undergraduate experience complete.
