The 2nd Undergraduate Research ConferenceIf you were in the HUB on April 118th you may have wondered what all the commotion was about, well, let's see if I can explain...Last Friday, nearly a hundred IIT students participated in the Second Undergraduate Research Conference. With projects ranging from computer software to gene therapy methods, IIT student showed off their research projects to judges and interested spectators. There were four categories of competition: Graduate research, Undergraduate research, Inter-Professional Projects (IPRO), and a Special Projects category which consisted mainly of the final projects of many Introduction to Professions(lTP) classes. Judging lasted from 2:00-4:00pm, and while the judges made their final decisions, all conference participants were invited to attend a special presentation by researchers in technological fields. One of the speakers, Dr. Richard Chylla of S.C. Johnson Polymers talked about - the characteristics of good researchers. |
The other speaker, a researcher at NASA, and spoke of his research projects for the US government and their applications. The conference culminated with the presentation of awards. Category prizes consisted of cash awards, $200 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. In addition, there were two $200, 'Class Act Awards' awarded to outstanding project backboards, which will be displayed in the Admissions office. A "best overall" award of $200, sponsored by the president's office was awarded to the project entitled"Integrated Digital Design and Testing Laboratory" by John Wiacek, Marcin Marjanski, Timothy Nyberg, Vicente Mendoza, Kagan Agun, Brian Holstein, Wei Xiaozheng, and Ding Bang Luh. Their sponsoring professor was Dr. Morris Chang of the Computer Sciences and Applied Mathematics Department. The Second Undergraduate Research Conference was a great success this year, and we hope to see even more of you turn out at next year's conference. |
