4th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference

THIS YEAR'S UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH presentation conference which was held on Friday, April 23rd in the Herman Union Building, encompassed all kinds of research projects ranging from computer science to materials and mechanical engineering to the biological and chemical sciences. The conference included research presentations on graduate research, undergraduresearch, special projects, high school research, and Inter-Professional Projects. The conference committee which was responsible for organizing this year's undergraduate research conference consisted of Cheryl Caplan of the Office of Student Affairs, Dr. Peter Johnson of Biological Chemical and Physical Sciences, and Emery Jordan who is a sophomore computer engineering student.

"One of the interesting changes over the past few years has been the use of the Internet" said Johnson. The approach of the new millennium is evident from the very rapid increase of the use of Technology in academic research.

This year, approximately one-third of the research projects involved the web in some manner. This year's conference was a huge success, both in attendance and in the stimulation of Illinois Tech's young minds towards new and creative ideas in an attempt to pave an easy path to the future. "The URAPC is a forum where fresh young minds can express their desire of making tomorrow a better place for humanity" said Mohammed Hussaini, a freshman computer-engineering student who was involved in a presentation in the special project division.

The undergraduate research conference provides a platform for students to launch a huge aspect of their academic careers, this of course, in performing research.

As Fard Muhammad, a freshman computer science student said, "this conference is a good opportunity for students to show off and share their knowledge of different technological aspects."

This year there were forty-six undergraduate

presentations, every one of which was worthwhile and interesting of course. There were three awards given in each category. For a listing of winners, visit TechNews on the web at wwwiit.edu/-technews.

After the presentation period there was a lecture by a guest speaker from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Daniel Kerkman, Vice President for Research at Molecular Geriatrics Corporation, who enlightened the presenters, earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at MIT.

There is no doubt in all that participated in this event that it was a tremendous learning experience, and just something to have fun with, and something to enjoy after all the hard work that was put in. On an ending note take a quote from Karim Fateem, a freshman computer science student, who expresses his view about the undergraduate research conference: " I learned quite a bit about team dynamics, and there is a whole lot more left for me to learn. Depending on the team, a plain idea can be turned into a great success, or a great idea into a plain failure."
