IIT's Best show their work (Abstracts) at the April 1997
After the poster presentations and judging, the crowd was seated in the HUB auditorium to hear our speakers. Prof. Peter Johnson surprised the crowd by asking them to sing happy birthday to Kamesh on his 21st birthday. Cheryl was working with the judges in a back room as they struggled to determine the award winners from so many excellent presentations.
Prof. Johnson introduced the speakers who emphasized the theme of the value of undergraduate research as an important factor in deciding to go on to graduate school. Dr. Donald Palac of
NASA spoke of the need for trained scientist and engineers at the space agency and later joined a student group at the
Como Inn Restaurant for more personal conversation.
Dr. Richard Chylla from Johnson Polymers Corporation spoke on the need for qualified researchers in industry and the importance of undergraduate research as part of the training process. The audience was invited to join the speakers in the Fireside Lounge where refreshments were served. Prof.
Peter Lykos of the BCPS Dept. and Conference staff Maban Jimenez share a moment and snack.
Vice President Hassen Nagib opened the awards ceremony by greeting the students, faculty, and invited guests. He spoke of the diversity and quality of the work presented. Lisa White-McNulty, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs whose office sponsored one of the prizes, listens to a student describe his experience with one of the judges.
Cheryl Caplan, with help from guest speaker Dr. Chylla and VP Hassan Nagib, presided over the awards ceremoney while Prof. Johnson takes pictures (as usual). Dean John Kallend presents the
Undergraduate College
1st place Award in the Undergraduate Research Division to Kathy Triantafillou for her project on electrode voltammetry.
Dean Carol Snow presented the Admissions
"Class Act" Award to two groups. Part of the deal was that the Admission's office would acquire the winning posters to hang in their office. The first of the "Class Act" prizes went Tom Pugsley, Ed Boone, Russ Schaade, and David Mahafee for their work on diffraction enhanced imaging. The second went to Bonnie Welcker for her work on molluscicidal efficacy of mucosal irritants.
Kamesh celebrated his 21st birthday as part of the team earning the 1st place Award in the Special Projects Division. The entire group, Kamesh, Nate Dishman, and Thean Yap celebrate their successes. Their project was done part of a mechanical engineering course assignment and involved the design of a tiltrotor.
A large crowd was on hand to congradulate the winners. Prof. Liam Coffe, BCPS Dept. and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, presents the Graduate Research Division Awards to Burkard Kalbfleisch for his 1st place work on the dynamics of continuous reactors for nonlinear polymerization and to William Catino for his work on methods of generalized projections.
You could from the proud looks on the faces of the students such as William Catino, that they were very happy with their day's accomplishments. The 2nd place award in the Undergraduate Research Division went to Eric Tatara for his work on modeling human respiratory systems.
Prof Peter Johnson and Cheryl Caplan, Director of ETC, switched positions as the ETC UGR Award was presented to Nitin Kartik, Alex Donati, and Mike Theemling for their work on Project Callisto. IPRO's are IIT's interdisciplinary team projects. The 3rd place IPRO Award went to the group of Mitchell Masilun, Anat Mor-Aui, Michael Porter, and Asli Velidedogus for work on post-occupancy evaluation.
The UGR conference top prize, the Overall Excellence Award given by the President's office was awarded to the IPRO project lead by Prof. Morris Changof the Computer Sciences and Applied Mathematics (CSAM) Dept. This group also won the 1st IPRO Award. The energic group of John Wiacek, Marcin Marjanski, Timothy Nyberg, Vicente Mendoza, Kagan Agun, Brian Holstein, Randy Demsetz, Wei Xiaozheng, and Ding Bang Luh savored the moment after hard work on their project, "Intergrated Digital Design and Testing Laboratory".
Finally, as noted, things do not just happen. The Second Annual Undergraduate
Research Conference Committee drew its members from all parts of the
University and worked hard to ensure the 2nd UGR Conference's success. A
round of applause for them-clap, clap - or a raise?? As the sun sets over
Lake Michigan, we are already gearing up for next year. Sweet dreams.
