Seeking Sancuary: LGBTQ Students in Catholic High Schools in Uganda
When : 12.45pm - 1.45pm
Where : MTCC Auditorium
In 2009, MP David Bahati proposed a bill in the Ugandan Parliament that would include the death penalty for homosexuality in certain cases. The Catholic bishops of Uganda were one of the few religious bodies to publicly oppose the bill, while at the same time continuing to condemn homosexuality. With support of The Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage at Loyola University Chicago, Michael Maher was able to travel to Uganda in 2012 and 2013 to conduct interviews with forty Catholic school teachers, LGBTQ alumni/ae, and other cultural informants. Maher is the author of Being Gay and Lesbian in a Catholic High School: Beyond the Uniform (Haworth Press, 2001). A light lunch will be provided.

The week will culminate with a spectacular International Fest, where students show off the local dance, music, poetry, and culture of their home countries. We have an amazing group of talented performers from around the world. Solo singers, flute players, bands, solo dancers, large group dance numbers and comedy routines make a regular appearance during the event. The audience is always wowed and leaves wanting more -- which they normally get during the after-party!
