The IPRO 301 - Back to the House of the Future was approached from three angles:

- Design of the fundamental system
- Technologies that support it
-
Regulations that maintain a safe and livable environment in the house

The team was divided into subteams to research and implement each aspect of the project.

System and Concepts Team

The System and Concepts sub-team worked on the development of ideas and an approach to designing a House of the Future product.
Concepts implemented:

- Modularity
- Sustainability
- Adaptability
- Flexibility

Products and Technology Team

The goal of the Products and Technology sub-team was to provide support to the Systems and Concepts sub-team by proposing technologies and applications that improve quality of life. The team addressed technologically related aspects of economic, social, cultural and environmental issues. Within each issue, specific technologies were chosen for practical utilization.

Code and Safety Team

The Code and Safety sub-team was meant to ensure that the House of the Future falls within the boundaries detailed in the 2003 International Building Code, and that it is a safe environment for human habitation. The team determined the building codes applicable to the project based on ideas from both the System and Concepts team and the Products and Technology team, and also guided the subteams in material selection and concept design.

Knowledge Database Team

The Knowledge database sub-team worked on building a repository of detailed information regarding research, development, regulations, design, technology, concepts, and any other information deemed pertinent by the project team. The database will serve as a comprehensive information resource for any and all parties interested in, working on, studying, or otherwise related to the project.
