Methodology

The eleven team-members have been divided into four groups: energy source (solar), evaporator, condenser, and web-design. In the first stage of the project, the individual engineering groups will focus on design alternatives for their unit. This will be done using literature and collaboration with professors. In the second stage, mathematical analysis of the designs will be performed to ensure feasibility on a per unit basis as well as during implementation in the overall design. Calculations will be made for a design case of 100 people. Assuming an average domestic water usage of 250 L/person*day, this is equal to 750,000 L total/ 30-day month. In the third stage, additional focus will be placed on efficiency, cost, and scale of the desalination process. To the highest degree possible, ChemCad usage will be integrated into the design process. In the fourth and final stage, project results will be analyzed and presented in form of a web-page, an oral presentation and a final report. Upon completion, evaluation of the chosen desalination procedure will be conducted using process design heuristics.
