IPRO319 started in the fall semester of 2002, with the goal of finding
its way down to El Salvador to perform a workshop. The workshop would
teach orthotic students at Don Bosco
University, in Soyapango, El Salvador, the use of a bracing system,
more commonly known as "the kit". We believe that the kit
is an excellent low cost alternative to surgery.
Throughout the past two semesters, students were split into three subgroups:
a group focused on improving the kit, a group focused on instructions
for kit usage, and a group focused on forming the workshop. Subgroups
then met to work on their area of focus about once a week. The time
remaining was used to learn scoliosis background, kit usage, and casting
techniques.
Plans are currently being formed for the trip, which will be made at
the end of the Spring 2003 semester, in mid-May.
Below is a figure of how we hope to make an impact with our trip to
El Salvador.
