| Housing
info for new students
Congratulations on your acceptance to IIT.
On campus housing is assigned in the order
of application. At this point, all the on-campus apartments
are assigned, so you have three main options:
1. Residence Hall Room
– If your deposit and contract are received by December
13 and confirmed, your room is guaranteed for the spring
semester. This can be done over the web or by fax. Besides
peace of mind, benefits include: Close and convenient
to Main Campus classes, especially good in winter. Free
high-speed internet hookups in every room. Computer lab
in building. No need for grocery shopping: Meal service
is in on-site cafeteria. The residence halls open on January
12.
2. Find someone who already has an on-campus
or off-campus apartment and wants a roommate.
Email housing1@iit.edu to have your free ad placed on
the Roommates website. The odds of finding housing this
way as a new student are not great as there are strict
limits on how many people may occupy one apartment, and
most students who have apartments on campus already have
roommates or friends who want to be their roommates. However,
it doesn’t hurt to try. You can also watch the website
to see if anyone with an apartment is seeking a new roommate.
3. Rent an apartment
at Prairie Shores, a private development, about 7 minutes
via shuttlebus to Main Campus. IIT will assist you with
this, and students are occupying about 80 apartments in
this off-campus complex.
For details on costs and the most up-to-date
information on any of these options, please visit the
website http://housing.iit.edu.For
information about the Prairie Shores apartments, the on-campus
apartment queue, and the roommates website, contact Kathe
Edwards Edwards@iit.edu.
For information about the residence
hall option, please visit the website and fax your application
and deposit to Questions call or email rooms@iit.edu.
Remember the time in Chicago is 11.5 hours
behind that in India. Office hours here are Monday through
Friday. Normal turnaround for confirmations is 2 Chicago
business days. If you have had no response after 2 business
day. , please contact Jean Bingham , director of auxiliary
services.
There are Indian students in the residence
halls as well as the on- and off-campus apartments, so
you will find plenty of friendly faces whichever option
you choose. My best advice is to make arrangements for
housing before your leave home, so you can focus on settling
in and adjusting to the time difference once you are here.
