If I told you that you could have seen a nude beach and two movies, gone canoeing, hiking and swimming on asunny, eighty-degree day, all for FIVE DOLLARS, would you have believed me? Not only would you not have believed me, but you probably would have asked how you missed out on this event right? This event, sponsored by Union Board, was a canoeing trip planned to the Wisconsin River that took place during the last week in August. The trip was a whole day event, allowing forty four people and one advisor to spend the first Saturday of school the way it should be spent, relaxing. Accompanied by Professor Peter Johnson, an avid outdoorsman, many excited IIT students left from school at about 7:30 in the morning, armed with a whole day's worth of food and drinks. The ride consisted of a movie and snacks to provide energy for the day's adventure. Upon arriving at the river, the organizer of the trip, Nikhil Joshi, took charge of the group. Quickly laying out a few ground rules and possible resting spots, he and Pete Johnson started the group out on the water. After an hour of canoeing, the group stopped at a bank along the river, where we spent the next hour hiking up a cliff. Some adventurous members decided to take a scenic route up and down the cliff, adding mystery and even skill to the hiking. |
Once everyone had returned to the river, stopping and swimming at sandbars along the river made up the next few hours of the afternoon. There was one incident that stands out. During the trip, we saw on the left sandbank, a beach composed of entirely nude males and females! Some canoeists, too embarrassed to even look, sped up their pace to move past the beach quickly. Others however had different, perhaps more curious attitudes. They changed the direction of their canoes so they were going directly at the beach, and only turned around once they had seen all they wanted to see. One canoeist even decided to take pictures, but I think he or she wants to remain nameless for some obvious reasons. The trip culminated with another movie on the rideback home, but everyone was too exhausted from the fun day to even notice. The Outdoor Recreation Committee of the Union Board, of which Nikhil, Arlyn Nacionales, and I are members also planned a little hiking trip to Starved Rock a few weekends ago, which was fun for all those who attended. In the future, we are playing Ultimate Frisbee on November 12, and have planned a trip to "Blast Camp" Paintball Area on November 9.
