Textbook: Fundamentals of Physics, Extended: Halliday / Resnick / Walker, 7th edition extended [Wiley 2005].
Schedule: Class:115 WH  MW 1:50 - 3:05;
Rec: 05: 123 E1  R 9:00 - 10:00 am; Rec 06 122 E1  F 2:00 - 3:00 pm
Content: Chapters 15-17, 21-33 of textbook.
  • Sinusoidal oscillations. Longitudinal and transverse waves. Standing and traveling waves.
  • Coulomb's Law. Electric field for discrete and continuous charge distributions. Integral form of Gauss's Law to determine the electric field in simple geometrical arrangements.
  • Electric potential, capacitance, resistance. Simple circuits involving resistors, capacitors, and DC batteries.
  • Magnetic fields, Ampère's Law, Faraday's Law, induction, and inductances.
  • Maxwell's equations in integral form. Electromagnetic waves -- reflection, refraction, and polarization.
  • For the laboratory component the student should be able to operate experimental setups and analyze data taken in exercises that involve the basic concepts covered in the course.
Laboratory Work: It is departmental policy that you cannot pass the course unless you complete all the laboratory experiments and hand in the reports.
Homework: Homework assignments will be collected on the dates indicated on the schedule below.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given in every recitation period. These will be used primarily to assess the class's understanding of the topic and to prepare you for the types of problems that will appear on the examinations. The quizzes may be on any previously covered material.
Examinations: There will be three examinations: two midterms and one final examination. These will be closed-book, closed-notes examinations. A one-page equation sheet may be brought to each exam.
Grading: The percentage weighting for each component are shown below. The final letter grades will be awarded on a scale as shown below. This scale may vary up or down slightly, depending on the difficulty of the examinations and quizzes.
