This is the first semester of a three-semester
introductory calculus-based course sequence, dealing entirely with
Newtonian mechanics. Students are expected to be meeting the learning
objectives of the corequisite (Math 151: Calculus I) while taking Phys
123.
Students completing this course should be able to analyze the behavior of idealized mechanical systems by applying the basic concepts and principles of Newtonian Physics. The following general topics are covered in the course.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Laboratory Work: | It is departmental policy that you cannot pass the course unless you complete all the laboratory experiments and hand in the reports. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Homework: | Homework assignments will be collected on the dates indicated on the schedule below. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Quizzes: |
Quizzes will be given in every recitation period. These will be
used primarily to assess the class's understanding of the topic and to
prepare you for the types of problems that will appear on the
examinations. The quizzes may be on any previously covered material. Old quizzes and tests: http://www.iit.edu/~johnsonp/oldtests123.pdf. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Examinations: | There will be three examinations: two midterms and one final examination. These will be closed-book, closed-notes examinations. A one-page equation sheet may be brought to each exam. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Grading: | The percentage weighting for each component are shown below. The final letter grades will be awarded on a scale as shown below. This scale may vary up or down slightly, depending on the difficulty of the examinations and quizzes. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
