Corporate Internship Program Mirae Foundation mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm 2. 1997 MIRAE CORPORATE SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM The Mirae Corporate Summer Internship Program was established in 1995 by the Mirae Foundation in partnership with its first corporate partner, the Samsung Group of Korea, to provide qualified students with a unique opportunity to work at a leading Korean multinational corporation. Through the Internship Program, students gain a first-hand introduction to the Korean business world, economy and society. By offering the Internship Program, the Mirae Foundation seeks to contribute to the globalization of the Korean economy and provide the Korean American student community with the rare opportunity to learn more about Korea. As Korean corporations grow to meet the challenges of international competition, Korean Americans possessing cross-cultural skills can play a vital role in the globalization process. Through this program, Mirae and the partner corporations seek to encourage accomplished and capable individuals to accept this challenge. The completion of this internship may lead to full-time employment with the sponsoring corporations both in the United States and Korea. All of the sponsoring Groups are true multinational entities whose operations and professionals span across the entire globe. GENERAL INFORMATION The Mirae Corporate Summer Internship Program is an 8-week summer internship which begins with one week of intensive training and a tour of facilities of the intern's host Group. For the remainder of the summer, interns will work on projects in their assigned affiliates or divisions within the host Groups. Each intern will be assigned a mentor in the division to provide advice and guidance and to ensure a productive and meaningful stay. o Duration: Approximately 8 weeks during the summer of 1997 o Where: Intern's host company, Korea o Qualifications: Undergraduate and graduate students of Korean descent or others with demonstrated records of strong interest in Korea, with good academic standing in the United States and Canada o U.S. Citizenship: Not required o Compensation and Benefits: - Round-trip airfare from North America to Seoul, Korea - Compensation will be competitive with student hires in Korea o Major: Students of all majors may apply o Language: Working knowledge of Korean preferable, but not essential o Permanent Employment: Successful completion of the internship may lead to permanent employment with the hosting company either in the U.S. or Korea APPLYING FOR THE INTERNSHIP I. APPLICATION PROCEDURE The application process for the 1997 Mirae Corporate Summer Internship Program will occur over TWO REGULAR CYCLES and ONE LATE CYCLE. Starting this year, we are also implementing Web-based application; we strongly urge you to choose this option in addition to submitting a hard-copy version. We will give priority to applicants who choose the on-line application option, as it will accelerate the process and ensure accuracy of your records. o First Cycle: Completed applications must be postmarked by January 1, 1997. Interviews will be conducted starting January 11, 1997, and applicants will be notified by February 1, 1997. o Second Cycle: Completed applications must be postmarked by February 1, 1997. Interviews will be conducted starting February 10, 1997, and applicants will be notified by March 1, 1997. o Late Cycle: Late Round applications will be considered only on a space available basis. We will not accept applications after the number of available internship positions has been filled. Furthermore, interviews for the Late Cycle will only be conducted at KASCON XI in Baltimore, in person. o The on-line application option is at http://www.mirae.com as of November 10, 1997. We strongly encourage everyone to choose this option. II. APPLICATION MATERIALS 1. The Mirae Corporate Summer Internship Application Form. A hard copy of the application form must be submitted even if the on-line version is used. 2. One letter of recommendation from a professor or academic advisor. The recommendation must be sealed. 3. An official college transcript. 4. One copy of your resume. 5. 2 essays, addressing the following topics: 1) How many Korean American students are there at your campus and in your class? What kind of backgrounds do they come from? Please explain the research methods and analysis used to arrive at your answer. This analytical essay should not exceed 1 double-spaced typed page in length. 2) Drawing from your personal, academic and/or job-related experience, write a proposal to the Mirae Foundation for a project you have in mind. The proposed project should enrich and add value to Korean Americans on your campus or across the U.S. as a whole. The proposal should include objective budget, and an explanation on how this project will empower and strengthen the Korean American community. The length of this piece should not exceed 2 double-spaced typed pages. 6. A passport size photo. 7. Three stamped, self-addressed envelopes. All requested materials must mailed together with a hard copy of the application form. Please do not have documents sent separately.
