I am currently writing my dissertation. My topic involves integrating sociolinguistics into workplace communication practices. More specifically, it seeks to define the relationship between rapport management theory and Leader-member Exchange. That is, it seeks to discover whether the use of rapport management has an effect on the relationship between leaders and members, and if so, how strong that relatioship actually is.
The dissertation will attempt to integrate both quantitative and qualitative research. It further seeks to introduce an experimental design to the field of Technical Communication, something that is lacking in much of the research in the field. As an emerging field, technical communication research has been primarily qualitative. With the exception of some visual design experiements, the field in general has not been focused on experimental research. Furthermore, there are many books, articles, and other media that suggest "how to" be a better communicator in the workplace. Although some of the books and articles are rooted in theory, many are not. Moreover, they continue to provide practioners with advice about how to improve communication. My goal is to provide empirical evidence for practioners that is rooted in theory, and proven by research.
