the hepcats are on the dance floor, the men in zootsuits with dangling watchchains and duo-tone wingtips, the women in pencil skirts with chunky heels and Andrews Sisters hairdos. And can they move. From Nicholby’s in Los Angeles to Swing 56 in New York City clubs all over America are getting into the swing of things, they're jumpin' to the sounds of swing jazz, straight from the horns of the gone guys onstage. But wait, this is not 1940, and these are definitely not your parents. It's 1999, the post-grunge age, the lounge era, and these hipsters are twenty- and thirtysomethings who actually dress up on the weekends and go dancing--with partners! Yes, it's one of the most happenin' scenes in L.A.--has been, in fact, for a couple of years for that little cult that's always first on any scene--but now its time has truly come: Nowadays, the mainstream is swinging too, thanks to some serious word-of-mouth and to the not-so-serious, hit indie-movie "Swingers."  When the movie opened in 1997, it received very little attention from audiences, but what did stand out, was the music. It wasn’t 40's Big Band anymore. There was an edge that made the old fashion music new again. This sound spread, and so did the dancing, but it wasn’t until the Gap’s "khaki-a-go-go" ad began airing, that swing took off. The Gap commercial made swing dancing look like a lot of fun. According to Neoswing.com, a web site dedicated to the growing popularity of swing, the Gap commercial was the real force behind swing’s comeback. The commercial became so popular that the Gap received letters from fans requesting the commercial be returned to the air when it’s run was completed. The reason swing has become so popular, according to many, is simply because it’s fun. There are involved steps, but many believe this adds to the appeal. It’s not like that music where all you can do is kind of bounce to the beat. It’s real dancing.  Renewed interest in swing has opened up doors for such bands as The Cherry Poppin Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddies, The Brian Setzer Orchestra, and the Squirrel Nut Zippers.
