Emla Cream is a miracle for hemodialysis patients with a low threshold for pain. Available by prescription, Emla Cream is a topical anesthetic that numbs the treated area. If used properly, you will feel absolutely no pain. It still amazes me that doctors and nurses do not actively promote this product. I heard about it from a mail list I belong to. One drawback is that it costs $40 per tube, and Medicare and many insurance companies do not pay for it. It's worth checking with your doctor. If your insurance does cover it, make sure your doctor gives you a prescription for a month's supply, two or three tubes. Here's how it works: Approximately an hour before you "go under the needles", thoroughly wash your access site. Place a tiny square of silk tape over each puncture that has yet to heal. Place a thick layer of Emla Cream on your graft or fistula, covering the entire area where you could potentially be stuck. Loosely wrap your arm in cellophane (Ceranwrap) and tape in place. When you get to the dialysis unit, unwrap your arm (or site) and thoroughly wash off all traces of the cream. DO NOT CUT CELLOPHANE OFF YOUR ARM! Your arm is numb and you could puncture your arm with the scissors (this does happen!)...not to mention damage your fistula or graph.
