Inside of Dell Axim X5
Axim Advanced (400mhz) photos are here (scroll way
down). Also a
little help for anyone else crazy enough to want to dissasemble their
axim is located at the bottom of the page.
Click on pictures for more detail. This is the basic (300mhz model), no customizations.
In case you were wondering, it is currently reasembled and in fine working
order.
My overall goal is to get linux running on this thing. I was trying to determine
whether or not a serial cable can be constructed, since Dell seemed to be of no
help, but now apparently they now have one for sale (woot!). Also, I will be trying
to figure out what each of the chips does.
If I come up with anything interesting, I'll try to get it posted.
Enjoy the pictures.

A Few Dissasembly Tips
There aren't really any plastic catches. After all the screws were out i was able to pop her open with pretty gentle effort. One thing that makes it difficult is that one of the rubber sides has to be removed. After two dissasemblies, the right rubber side on mine is starting to lose some of its stickiness, but im not really worried. There are 6 screws in back, two behind the battery, and one behind each rubber dealy. The top two rubber deals are stuck on with glue (mine still stick fine) and the bottom two are simply held in by a little friction.
Watch out for the speaker cable when you lift out the motherboard, its kinda short. I think the way to go on this one is to disconnect it at the board.
Also be wary of the LCD cable, in general it has been my experience that the less you fiddle with the LCD contacts, the more likely it is to work when you put it back together. You can see from the pictures that i never disconnected the cable.
Want to see some real photography? Or maybe you just need some
