Gateways to a Medical Career
IIT offers two honors premedical programs in engineering and medicine that guarantee admission to medical school. Both programs lead to a bachelor of science from IIT and an M.D. degree from one of two Chicago-area medical schools. A third option enables students to minor in pre-medical studies, and a post-baccalaureate program is offered for college graduates who wish to pursue a medical education but lack the necessary academic background.

The IIT and Rush Medical College Combined Honors Program in Engineering and Medicine is an six-year program. Students apply during their sophomore year at IIT. Students admitted to the program complete a bachelor of science at IIT and then move on to Rush Medical College to complete either an M.D. or combined M.D./Ph.D. degree. All students must complete a medically oriented research project. Separately, IIT offers a Biomedical Research Scholar Award to incoming freshman students interested in a research experience before applying to the IIT/Rush Program.

The IIT Minor in PreMedical Studies enables students to choose a major in any degree program offered at IIT while completing specialized requirements for admission to medical school. Students who complete the coursework earn a PreMedical Studies Minor upon graduation.

The Post-baccalaureate Premedical Program is designed for students who already possess a college degree but lack the coursework required for admission to medical school. The program generally takes three years, during which students receive a rigorous education in all areas of the premedical sciences.

IIT Leads Quest to Restore Vision to Blind

Armed with a $3.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, IIT’s Philip Troyk is leading ongoing research into a visual prosthesis, which could restore vision to the blind. The device—about the size of a postage stamp—uses four 256-channel electric stimulators setting on a patient’s skull under the skin to produce the tiny current needed to drive 1,024 miniature electrodes implanted in the visual cortex.

"Of all the universities I considered, IIT offered me the best overall potential college experience. The guaranteed medical program has enabled me to explore new and exciting subjects without hesitation."
