Bridge Building Contest at Morgan Park
2003 Winner
The Physics classes at Morgan Park High School held their annual bridge building
contest on Friday, January 10th. Each participant was given 30 feet of
3/32" square
basswood and a set of design parameters and asked to build the most efficient bridge
possible. Typically the bridges held 200-300 times their own weight - the equivalent of an
average person lifting a semi-trailer. From the competitions at Morgan Park, four students
were selected to participate in the Chicago Region
Bridge contest which was held Tuesday, February 11th. Winners from
that contest will
receive free travel back to IIT to participate in the International
Bridge Contest in
May.
Last year,
two Morgan Park students finished in the top 10 with Elyn Ballantyne
finishing
fourth.
