Section V. D. Library Programs
LIBRARY PROGRAMS - All incoming freshman classes have a Library Orientation during the first weeks of October. Our orientation acquaints them with the general layout of the library, where our reference material, periodicals, fiction, computers, computer lab, and all of the holdings of the library are found.
We then acquaint them with the process for checking books and/or other material out of the library, and a review of library rules. This year we gave an application to all incoming freshmen without a Chicago Public Library card to apply for a card. We have a working relationship with the Chicago Public Library, Walker Branch, which is within walking distance of the school. We also have a working relationship with St. Xavier University and Chicago State University. All students are able to use the library facilities of these nearby universities. IB students will have borrowing privileges at St. Xavier University's library. We are working with Chicago State University to obtain the same.
Teachers are asked to submit a research request form for their classes, when needed, so we will be prepared with the materials for that class. We will then know exactly what we will need to introduce to the students and what reference materials to introduce to the classes. The students will then have an opportunity to browse the library and ask questions after the orientation that will help them locate needed material.
We have a large number of students and find that an in-depth orientation of the
library is best when they have a specific project to complete. The classes are given an in-depth presentation of the materials they will need to complete their reports, but we will also touch on all of the materials that the library has to offer that might be of service to them for this project and/or others. Usually, the classes will have at least two days to spend in the library and will have much more time for hands-on work.
TRAINING FOR LIBRARY MEDIA STAFF - The head librarian has a Master's Degree in Library Science and Communications and the library assistant has 18 hours toward her Master's Degree in Library Science.
The library staff has been actively involved in assessing the library media center needs of the IB Diploma Program.
