Exploring
Angles and Line Relationships

by

Glenda A. Ellis

This lesson was created as a part of the SMART website and is hosted by the Illinois Institute of Technology

Grade Levels: 7

Subject: Mathematics/Arithmetic

Introduction:

This lesson is designed to teach students how to identify geometry terms, shapes, classify angles, lines and to determine the different between edges and vertices.

Vocabulary Words:

Students will identify vocabulary words such as ray, angles, right angle, acute angle, obtuse angles, triangles, intersecting lines, and perpendicular line, by constructing or drawing them.

Purpose:

To assess students knowledge of  vocabulary words, geometry terms, classifying angles and lines.

Objectives: Students will  recognize angles and lines, identify three-dimensional shapes, determine the difference between edges, faces, vertices; understand the difference between a prism and a pyramid

Materials:

 Procedures:

Hand out packets of shapes. Post pictures of shapes on the board and no charts. Discuss what a three-dimensional shape is and the difference between two and three-dimensional shapes. Students will construct  three dimensional shapes from the hand out packet . Once everyone has constructed their shapes (this takes a while) have them to explain the concepts; of edges, and vertices using the models. Review  the  lesson.

Assessment: Assessment is on-going throughout the lesson. 100% participation is required throughout the lesson, because the students have to cut and paste together their shapes and construct models of triangular pyramids and prisms. This is a great lesson to do with students, because they love constructing things.
