Bowling Speed
This lesson is designed to provide only a basic understanding on one of the physics of bowling by examining the speed of a ball going down the lane.
Objective:
Students will be able to determine and explain the speed of a bowling ball going down the lane.
Students will be able to define vocabulary associated with speed.

Introduction:
There are many other variables that may affect how well you bowl. For example, as the ball leaves your hand it may be rolled on an angle.

On an actual lane, the position of the weight within the ball will effect how it rolls. The type of oil and the percentage of the lane that it is applied to will effect the direction and the speed in which the ball rolls. The speed and direction of the ball is an important factor in knocking over pins.

Materials needed:
plastic (child's toy) bowling ball annpins
stop watches
flat hard surface (15ft in length)
Activity:
In a hallway, have your class divided in half. Have each have to line the hallway on either side of area (flat hard surface) to be used for demonstration of the lesson. Release the bowling ball ( allow to roll approximately 15ft). (If possible have plastic bowling pins or plastic bottles set up at the end of the surface) Then have student volunteers to repeat the procdess. Have the students to time the roll and observe what has taken place. Return to the classroom. Review speed:
V=D /T
Conclusion:
Student will use their notes to make a distance / time graph chart of what happened when the ball was rolled.

Student Challenge:
Go to your local bowling alley and practice rolling/throwing the ball – have a friend to time the speed, record the information and report back to class.
Evaluation:
Based on the class activity, define speed.
Write a definiton for the following words: speed, time, distance.
