Here are a few ideas about how to increase the critical thinking of your students.
I feel that there is an enormous difference between preparing for a lab where the student merely has to copy the procedure and then reproduce the charts/tables that are necessary. So the first thing you can do is reproduce the activity but have the students create the data charts. Initially most will have to be guided through the process. Doing this makes the activities "more authentic." Let's take a look at some specifics.
In the MASS experiment, you will need some inertial balances. You should be able to get these from the Physics department in your school. Of course, if you are the physics instructor this should be easy. I require that my students use a spreadsheet to produce graphs. (Technology Infusion)
I am still looking for a good experiment about Volume. What I suspect is that I will have to develop one. If anyone has any suggestions email me.
The same can be said for the density experiments. Have the students produce the data tables and use a spreadsheet for the graphing.
The boiling point experiment is straightforward. I use alcohol burners and, after demonstration, let the students prepare their own capillary tubes. The real trick with this lab is finding enough liquids that boil below the boiling point of water. If you have thiele tubes available your choices are expanded enormously.
