Introduction

Welcome to my current lesson!  Here we are again and this time we are going to look at the fundamental building block of the universe- matter.  More specifically, we will look at some matter's physical properties.  The primary properties we will address are 1) mass, 2) volume, 3) density and specific gravity, 4) boiling point, 5) melting point, and 6) specific heat.

Obviously these concepts cannot be learned in one class period.

Objectives
At the end of this lesson, the student will be able to:

1.   Define matter;
2.   Explain the difference between mass and weight;
3.   Define volume;
4.   Mesaure the mass of a substance using a balance;
5.   Fine the volume of a substance either by calculation, measurement or displacement;
6.   Calculate the density of a substance by interpreting a graph of mass and volume data or directly both    from a measured mass and from either a measured or calculated volume;
7.    Explain how density and specific gravity are related and perform calculations for specific gravity;
8.   Classify changes in matter as either chemical or physical;
9.   Distinguish properties as extensive or intensive;
10. Define boiling point of any substance;
11. Perform a boiling point experiment  and identify an unknown ;
12. Define melting point for a substance;
13. Perform a melting point experiment  and identify an unknown ;
14. Define specific heat;
15. Perform a specific heat experiment ;
16. Identify an unknown substance by using the information learned in this lesson and performing the appropriate analyses;
17. Write a report using the knowledge gained in this lesson.
