Workshop Overview

This workshop provides participants with a simple introduction to how internet of things (IoT) devices are programmed. Participants will learn how to read and process input from sensors, program functionality, and provide output utilizing a user-friendly, all-in-one board—the AdaFruit Circuit Playground.

Students will learn to make their home smart and help keep it safe by creating and connecting sensors for a cardboard smart-home. The sensors will communicate threats such as open doors, windows, smoke, chemical gases, and changes in temperature.

These concepts can be scaled up and applied to a real home.

Students will keep the AdaFruit Circuit Playground that is included in the price of the course.    

Who Should Attend

This NxtGen IT and Cybersecurity course is open to any high school sophomore, junior or senior, as well as those technically advanced incoming freshmen who receive Illinois Tech staff approval. No prerequisite knowledge is required; however, it is recommended that students have some technical knowledge. Students practice hands-on basic techniques and continue into advanced techniques while building small project-based websites and web applications.


Jeremy Hajek an industry associate professor and a graduate and undergraduate adviser in the information technology and management program at Illinois Tech. He is also the director of the Smart Tech: Embedded Systems Lab at Illinois Institute of Technology.
