Program Description

Game Design is an online program that gives students the opportunity to design and create a game through the twine coding platform. Students will examine Choose Your own Adventure games, games with themes in social justice, as well as methods and forms of interactive storytelling. Students will refine their writing skills by crafting characters, worlds, as well as the Hero's Journey. This course was built using backward design from The Common Core Writing Standards (CCSS) as well as the International Society for Technology and Education (ISTE) Standards.

Program Objectives


  • Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits.
  • Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.
  • Students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and pursuing answers and solutions.


  • Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
  • Students develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design process.


  • Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.


  • Students explore local and global issues and use collaborative technologies to work with others to investigate solutions.

Eligibility and Program Requirements

10th–12th grade (ages 14-17); no prior coding knowledge necessary.

Upon registration, students must submit the following in order to confirm enrollment in the program:

  • Program fee
  • Parental consent form, which will be sent by email via DocuSign

Access to a laptop or desktop computer, stable internet access, and the ability to download and install software is required. We will be using the Zoom platform for the Game Design: Interactive Storytelling program. In order for the program to be as interactive as possible, students are encouraged to use their webcam during the synchronous sessions. Illinois Tech will not record the sessions or use images for marketing purposes. View Zoom privacy policy.
