F.7 Violence in the Workplace

Conduct that threatens or intimidates employees or other university affiliated persons is not tolerated. This includes acts of violence, indirect or direct threats, verbal or written, and any harassment and sexual misconduct that is prohibited by federal, state or local law. (See also the university’s policies on Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct, which are set forth in the Employee Conduct, Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct section of this Handbook.)

7.01

All threats of or actual violence, both direct and indirect, must be reported immediately by an employee to his/her supervisor, Human Resources or the General Counsel’s Office. This includes threats by university employees, students, contract employees, Board members, visitors, vendors and any other persons with whom the university conducts business. When reporting a threat, the employee should be as specific and detailed as possible. An investigation will be conducted. Any communication relating to such a threat should be retained to be used in the investigation. All reports of work-related threats will be kept confidential to the extent possible.

7.02

Employees who believe they are in imminent danger (e.g. receives a bomb threat, a threatening visitor, or the like) should:
  • Immediately dial 911 or the campus security number 8-6363;
  • Report the incident to their supervisor as soon as thereafter practicable; and
  • Not engage in either physical or verbal confrontation with a potentially violent individual.

7.03

In furtherance of this policy against violence in the workplace, possession of a firearm or weapon, regardless of whether the owner possesses a concealed carry permit or other license, on university premises or while conducting business for the university is prohibited by university policy, which can be viewed here

7.04

Any employee determined to be responsible for threats of or actual violence or other conduct that violates this policy will be subject to prompt disciplinary action up to and including termination.
