“The United States Supreme Court has said a defendant who represents [themself] is held to the same standard as an experienced criminal defense attorney,” says Richard Kling, a clinical professor of law at the Chicago-Kent College of Law. “He’s not going to be able to come in later and say, ‘Well, I didn't know what I was doing because I'm not really a lawyer.’”
"The scientific evidence summarized in our review indicates that pecans represent a convenient, ready-to-eat snack option requiring no preparation," according to study co-author Indika Edirisinghe, a professor of food science and nutrition at the Illinois Institute of Technology. "As a nutrient-dense plant food, research demonstrates that pecan consumption is associated with a reduced risk of cardiometabolic disease."
“What most people don’t understand is that the data center is ‘the cloud,’” says Tommy Zakrzewski, adjunct professor of environmental engineering. “‘The cloud’ is something that we use to describe that data center. It’s sort of like a metaphor for the internet.”
"Everybody's got to be experimenting," said Steve Rubinow, former chief information officer at the New York Stock Exchange and current associate teaching professor at Illinois Tech. "Nobody can afford to be a late adopter, it doesn't matter what industry you're in, because the technology is moving so quickly, and people see there's a competitive advantage or competitive necessity. The question is, what experiments do you choose? Where are you in the risk reward curve?"
“The ultimate result is to create something infringing by saying, ‘Hey, here you go, go grab that infringing stuff and use that in our system,’” said Cathay Y. N. Smith, a law professor and co-director of Chicago-Kent College of Law’s Program in Intellectual Property Law. Microsoft “could potentially have some sort of secondary contributory liability for copyright infringement, downloading it, as well as then using it to encourage others to use it for training purposes.”
“It’s almost Greek tragedy that Roberts, who has often endorsed expansive presidential power, including in the immunity opinion, is confronted by a president who is not only happy to take that to the far extreme, but doesn’t accept any constraints,” said Carolyn Shapiro, a professor at Chicago-Kent College of Law.
“In the past 20 years, globally mobile learners have increased from 1.2 million to 7.4 million. Gone are the days when students simply moved to developed nations for education followed by employment,” said Mallik Sundharam, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs. “In the past five years alone, 33 global capability centres have been established in India. The country is no longer seen just in terms of volume or service capacity — it is increasingly viewed as a hub of talent. As employers move to where talent is, it is natural for universities to follow. We launched the strategy, ‘meet the learners where they are’, to serve employers and students where they are, which is the whole vision behind establishing this campus.”
Mohammad Asadi, associate professor of chemical engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology, said his team’s battery might be able to deliver 2,000 Wh/kg for a kamikaze drone, since he could strip out components needed for greater cycle life. “We could put the system in maximum,” he said.
“There are pockets of research, pockets of growing, but to holistically create this in a city center has never been done,” said Brian Schaneberg, executive director of the Institute for Food Safety and Health.
The idea of using drones as mobile cell towers isn’t new. But a fundamental problem has persisted: how do you figure out exactly how many drones to deploy, and where to put them, without wasting energy or leaving users without coverage? A team at Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) now has an answer, and it involves training a machine learning algorithm to make those deployment decisions in near-real-time.
