Description

The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is hosting the first seminar in their Fall '18 Graduate Research Seminar Series featuring Dr. Zhiyi Li, Seniour Research Associate , ECE Illinois Institute of Technology. Dr. Li will speak on the topic of his seminar, The Role of Cybersecurity in Smart Grid Operations.

Abstract

Modern power systems have been undergoing the transition to smart grids which are by nature
cyber-physical systems where physical processes in power grids and information flows in
communication networks are tightly coupled for enabling the overall system functionality. Notably,
the wide implementation of sensing and measurement systems radically expands the exposure of
power system operations to malicious cyberattacks, which advances concerns about the
cybersecurity in the context of smart grids. This presentation will shed light on the security posture
of smart grid operations resulting from extensive cyber-physical interdependencies, and outline the
ongoing efforts to enhance the overall efficiency, reliability, and resilience of electricity service
provisions. In particular, this presentation will put forward innovative solutions to achieve
cybersecurity enhancement in smart grid operations, with the emphasis on the convergence of
information technology and operational technology.
